Okanagan Xeriscape Contest – 2011

The Okanagan Xeriscape Assoc is holding a contest for best garden, and Classic Compost will be “unloading” one of the prizes. You could win $500 just for entering! The Xeriscape Assoc aims to build awareness of xeriscape gardening principles for a healthier community. We’ll all benefit from photos of your garden, publicizing the need to conserve our natural resources.

The contest is open to all residential homeowners in the Central Okanagan (Lake Country to Peachland) with any water-wise or xeriscape landscaping on their property. Winners will be selected based on their understanding and demonstration of xeriscape principles.

According to xeriscape gardening principles, the first and best thing you can do for your garden is dig in some compost rich soil. Compost will naturally increase water retention, resist pests and fertilize your plants. Then discourage evaporation and weeds with a layer of organic mulch over your soil. Organic mulch continues to feed your plants over the growing season.

CATEGORIES AND PRIZES

  • Best Homeowner-Installed Garden – Full Property where all of the landscaping follows xeriscape principles.
  • Best Homeowner-Installed Garden – Partial Property where a part of the landscaping follows xeriscape principles.
  • Best Professionally Designed and Installed Residential Garden – Full or Partial Property (the prize will go to the homeowner with recognition to the professional)

Entries received by August 15th are eligible for an early bird draw prize of two yards of Class A compost, delivery included, from yours truly. All entries are eligible for a $500 wildcard draw. The deadline for photos and completed entry form is coming up fast: August 31, 2011.

Best garden in each category will receive an engraved metal garden sculpture by B-line Design. The winning gardens will be featured on the Okanagan Xeriscape Association website.
